GreenThumb provides a variety of support
and resources to school gardens!

The following resources are available to registered Grow To Learn school gardens through giveaways or by attending a seasonal workshop.

  • Lumber
  • Soil, Compost, and Mulch
  • Seeds
  • Plants
  • Gardening Tools
  • Literature

Details for each of these resources are explained below:

Lumber

We allocate pieces of 10 inch x 8 foot pine for use in constructing raised beds (nails or screws are included with this for fastening upon request), a maximum of 30 pieces per garden per season.  **Generally 1-2 months from order to delivery**

Soil/Compost/Mulch

In order to receive soil, compost, or mulch from GreenThumb you must attend a soil or composting workshop.  The workshops take place in both the Spring and Fall, and there are two in each season (see GreenThumb's event page for details). At the workshop you will be provided with a soil/compost request form which outreach coordinators will go over and fill out with you.  **Fall orders are delivered the following Spring, and Spring orders the following Fall**

Seeds

GreenThumb holds an annual seed giveaway every year at the end of winter in mid-late March.  There is also a workshop on cover crops every Fall, in which cover crop seed is distributed. The larger seed giveaway takes place at the GreenThumb office located at: 49 Chambers St. Room 1020 New York, NY – 10007

Plants

Throughout the gardening season GreenThumb holds a number of workshops in which plants are distributed to attendees. There is also an annual plant giveaway in Brooklyn in which flats of vegetable, herb and flower seedlings are allocated.

Tools

During GreenThumb’s annual Spring/Summer Supply Giveaway gardening tools are distributed.  Supplies vary from year to year, but generally watering supplies, hand tools (hoes, rakes, shovels, trowels and forks), garbage bags and gloves are available here.  This event takes place at the GreenThumb Compound in Long Island City, Queens at: 10th Street and Queens Plaza South.

Literature

Many workshops throughout the year include book giveaways as well as resource guides, pamphlets and useful handouts.  The book(s) provided will vary depending upon the material presented in the workshop. See GreenThumb's event page for details.
